Tahina Expedition Prepares To Set Sail

Frank Taylor and his wife, Karen, are about to embark on quite a journey. They will soon depart Carolina Beach on their 50 foot catamaran boat, the Tahina, to sail around the world! They plan to sail for 5 years, visiting many places around the world.

Scott Dodd, 5th grade teacher, read an article about Mr. Taylor in the Star News and contacted him. Mr. Taylor graciously agreed to speak with our 5th grade students on Monday, November 2nd, 2009 about the voyage of the Tahina and the path that's lead he and his wife to this adventure.

Frank and Karen are working together with Google Earth. They will take pictures using aerial kite photography and send them to Google Earth. Google Earth will display the photos as the trip progresses.

You can check out the 3D model of the Tahina Expedition at the Google Earth Blog, founded and maintained by Frank Taylor.

They will also have a ROV submersible camera that they will be putting in the water to record the state of coral reefs around the world. They will facilitate students and other enthusiasts the opportunity to control this ROV at different points of their journey! (Yes, that means CBS students, too!)

The Taylors will also be blogging about their experiences throughout their trip. You can follow the adventure at the link below:

This is the beginning of an exciting expedition for our students as well as Frank and Karen. We wish them calm seas and fair skies! Bon voyage!
